Carved from burnt bone, this miniature hen statuette is the oldest identified Chinese function of artwork, according to an international workforce involving the CNRS, the universities of Bordeaux (France), Shandong (China), Bergen (Norway), and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel). It was unearthed at Lingjing, a site in Henan Province, in an archaeological context dated to between thirteen,800 and thirteen,000 several years ago. This discovery pushes again the origins of animal sculpture and representations in East Asia by more than 8,five hundred several years (1). The stylistic and technical particularities of the figurine – it is the only identified Palaeolithic sculpture symbolizing an animal standing on a pedestal – point to an unique creative tradition, diverse from those identified in Western Europe and Siberia. The object’s extraordinary condition of preservation and the researchers’ use of condition-of-the-artwork analytical tactics, these kinds of as confocal microscopy and microtomography, have enabled the workforce to meticulously reconstruct the Palaeolithic artist’s method.
