Fossilized wing gives clues about Labrador’s biodiversity during the Cretaceous

A fossilised insect wing found in an deserted mine in Labrador has led palaeontologists from McGill University and the University of Gda?sk to establish a new furry cicada species that lived about 100 million many years back.

Maculaferrum blaisi, described in a study released in Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, is the first hemipteran insect (real bug) to be found at the Redmond Formation, a fossil internet site from the Cretaceous interval close to Schefferville, Labrador.

Alexandre Demers-Potvin, a Master’s pupil underneath the supervision of Professor Hans Larsson, Director of the Redpath Museum at McGill, explained that a one wing was adequate to establish the loved ones to which the insect belonged.

“We have been very easily in a position to reveal that the insect belonged to the Tettigarctidae loved ones thanks to the pattern of the veins we noticed on its wing,” explained Demers-Potvin, who is also a 2018 Nationwide Geographic Explorer.

The genus identify (Maculaferrum) is derived from the Latin words macula – place – for the reason that of the noticed pattern identified on elements of the wing and ferrum – iron – thanks to the large iron written content of the red rocks identified at the Redmond internet site. The species identify – blaisi – is in honour of Roger A. Blais, who carried out the first study of the Redmond Formation and of its fossils in 1957 whilst functioning for the Iron Ore Enterprise of Canada.

“This presents us a much better knowledge of the site’s insect biodiversity during the Cretaceous, a time just before the dinosaurs have been wiped out,” Demers-Potvin added. “The locating also illustrates that exceptional species can be identified at the Redmond mine and that it deserves the notice from the palaeontological local community.”

“The uncover is fascinating for the reason that it represents the oldest, numerous insect locality in Canada. It is also from an fascinating time during an evolutionary explosion of flowering crops and pollinating bugs, that developed into the terrestrial ecosystems of right now,” explained Larsson.
