Leakey Foundation Award Lecture: Communicating about human evolution

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Evolution can be a controversial and sensitive matter in America. How can scientists and educators enable change public knowledge and acceptance of human evolution? Dr. Briana Pobiner will answer this concern in a speak entitled “Participating with General public Audiences on Human Evolution” on June 22 at 5:00 pm Pacific Time.

“Engaging the general public is genuinely a two-way road,” said Dr. Pobiner. “It is really not just about delivering individuals additional scientific facts it’s about listening, becoming respectful, and finding connections.” Pobiner’s method to science education and learning is a end result of her several decades of major instruction and outreach at the Smithsonian’s Countrywide Museum of Organic Heritage Human Origins Software and her situation as a research professor in the Centre for the Advanced Analyze of Human Paleobiology at the George Washington University.

In addition to her education and learning and outreach operate, Dr. Pobiner is a paleoanthropologist whose exploration facilities on the evolution of human diet plans with a target on meat-consuming. She has carried out fieldwork in fashionable ecosystems, performed excavations, and studied fossil collections in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Indonesia, Romania, and the US. Dr. Pobiner is the 2021 recipient of the American Affiliation of Bodily Anthropology and Leakey Basis Interaction and Outreach Award in Honor of Camilla Smith. The award was to start with set up in 2019 to realize the worth and urgency of advertising scientific literacy, clarity of information, and initiatives to foster respect and being familiar with for the variation, adaptation, and evolution of human beings and their residing and fossil relatives. In 2021, the award was renamed to honor Camilla M. Smith, the outgoing president of The Leakey Foundation’s board of trustees.

“I am so honored to have been nominated for this award, and to obtain it.” explained Dr. Pobiner. “It is really heartening to see that community engagement and outreach are becoming valued and rewarded in this way. But it genuinely can take a village to do this. I don’t do it on my have. In fact, I share this award with the instructors, learners, volunteers, scientist and educator colleagues, and so lots of others that I perform with.”
