The honey bee (Apis mellifera) life in colonies of lots of thousand people today which live in a hive (an artificially produced ‘nest’). There are a few types of honey bee: queens, drones and staff.
Queen. There is only a person queen in a hive. She is the only bee that can lay eggs. She is fed by the personnel. She is mated by a single of the drones and merchants his sperms in a unique sac in her physique. This offer of sperms lasts for her lifetime.
Drones are male bees. Their function is to fertilise the following queen when she hatches. They do not gather nectar or pollen but are fed by the staff. There are only a couple of hundred drones for each hive. In winter they are expelled from the hive.
Workers are woman bees but they are sterile, i.e. they are unable to lay eggs. There may perhaps be 20,000 to 80,000 staff in a hive. Amid other duties, the personnel assemble the honeycomb employing wax secreted from glands on their abdomens. The combs consist of an array of hexagonal ‘cells’ into which eggs are laid or nectar and pollen stored.
Eggs laid by the queen in some of these cells build into larvae which are fed by the staff right up until they develop into pupae. The workers then set a capping more than the cells right until the adult bees are completely ready to emerge.
Workers’ obligations. The staff carry out a sequence of duties as they come to be older. At 1st they cleanse the hive by getting rid of lifeless larval ‘skins’ and lifeless bees. Later they start out to feed the larvae on nectar and pollen. After 10 to 12 days their wax glands grow to be energetic and they create the cells of the honeycomb. In about a few weeks, the personnel go away the hive and go foraging for nectar and pollen from flowers. They acquire these items back again to the hive and shop them in the cells.
